So, I have some bad news since I was last on here. At my prior job I was hurt because of inadequate safety equipment. I was having to help lift 300 lb. Railroad ties and wound up getting hurt.

I hurt my back, which has finally cleared up, but was out of work for a little while. A little after the first work comp meeting, they discovered that it had wound up giving me a small inguinal hernia.

Here's the thing, my back isn't bothering me at all anymore, and I have full range of motion even with the hernia. Once I get that fixed, will I be able to get my CDL or am I just screwed.

    Thanks for the help.

If you have recovered, it should be no problem.

Hell I got mine with a hernia. As long as it does not affect you, you are good to go.

No problem, drivers get hurt, and come back, part of life.

The doctor will have you bend over and touch your ankles ,he might press on your spine asking if anything hurts or have you twist alittle bit ....if you can touch your ankles &twist .....youre good to go !

You should be ok either way. If you want to fix it first, great. If you want to certify with the hernia you should probably be ok too.

As long as it doesn't cause discomfort, or interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle, you can be certified.

    https://nrcme.fmcsa.dot.gov/mehandbook/other_hernias_ep.aspx

I just re certified last week. I used an examiner of the opposite sex and didn't so much as have to take my shirt off. She did "check" for hernias... I guess. While laying on the exam table she slid her finger tips down my pants a couple inches below my waist line and had me lift my feet up off the table 6" while she was feeling my abdomen. She didn't ask if I had a hernia, and checked "No" on the long form next to hernias. --And this was under the new registered examiners rules.

The questions you answer on the long form doesn't even ask if you have a hernia. I guess it is up to them to find it.

My advice is don't lie if asked, but don't volunteer any information that doesn't affect the safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle. And use an examiner of the opposite sex. It has been my experience the exams are less intrusive. You should be certified even with the hernia, but if you can get "No" checked off next to the hernia question, all the better.

You can get certified. My wife passed her physical with a huge hernia near her belly button. Just try to keep it off any paperwork. Her boss told her, off the record, that some employers will consider her a "walking workman's comp case" so she shouldn't mention it unless she absolutely has to.

If you get it fixed before you try to get hired you should be ok.
