Hi everybody! i need some help with my dads truck and was wondering if you guys could help me. my question is, is there anyway to get the PDF and its components removed? the truck in question is a 2009 t660 with a cummins engine. i asked some shops in los angeles and they all said it was illegal to get the DPF removed. also the truck billows black smoke when it is rev'd. is this normal? the cummins tech said it was bad for the truck, but i would like to get some second opinions. so thanks guys!

Sounds like the DPF is completely clogged with ash OR may have been contaminated and or damaged with coolant from the EGR system. The only way to tell for sure is to get it diagnosed with a reputable shop. There is no way to removed the DPF system that I'm aware of. The DPF filters are VERY expensive so the problem that has caused the issue (if there is a problem other than just being full of soot and ash) needs to be addressed before the install of a new DPF Filter.

We have had some success with getting the DPF filters washed, but have no idea what is involved with that

being in Californa, if there is a shop that removes the DPF, they will lose their license and be jailed. I doubt you will find a shop to due that, unless it was all under the table. CARB laws will not allow it and they are more severe than the EPA laws and fines.

Now, the black smoke is overfueling or air getting choked off. EGR can cause some of these issues based on the engine getting the readings to make the needed adjustments, but I doubt it. Also, if dpf was plugged, you would get a derate issue or some engine codes.

On the filter, you need to remove it and either get a kit to blow it out with shop air or get it baked at a Cummins shop. They owne the technology so you will do best to get it baked, that is if it needs it.

with the dpf, you could have other issues as well. You could have sensor issues, injector dribble issues into the catalyst, or fueling issues to the catalyst. A bad egr valve will cause power issues and cause the dpf to not operate properly as well.

Your in trouble of your getting smoke out the stack usually means the Dpf is cracked need to pull it apart and check to see how plugged the Dpf filter is and have it cleaned about 300 to have it cleaned but if its bad looking at 3500 the doc is suppose to be non serviceable but we clean them with a steam cleaner we just stay out of the camaras view.also do your self a favor remove the doser housing from the turbo and clean the doser injector that bad boy gets plugged and causes all kind of issues

It is illegal, not impossible. But, if it is the original DPF the replacement/upgrade is a lot better, I only have experience with 1 so I am no expert by any means, after 2-3 CELs a week the local (Cincinnati) KW dealer found a crack and replaced the whole thing, the burner, and nozzle and all. He claimed it was an upgrade and addresses a lot of the problems, anyway 9 months later not 1 CEL, and the only time it regens is going down the road. Like I said earlier I've only delt with 1 and so far so good.
