I am a new driver and just got a job. In order for me to run legal in the US I have to complete a drug test, which I know that I will pass.
I do not drink often and do not use any sort of drugs either prescribed or the illegal ones. I totally agree with the testing. I have a cold at the moment, and have considered taking a cough medication such as neocitran, or benylin but am worried that if I take something for the cold that I will fail the drug test. So is there a cough medication out there that wont affect the results? Also if I do take a medication for the cough would it be best to take the stuff with me when I go?

anything without alcohol is the best, If you do take nyquil are an alcohol based meds, make sure its been over 8 hours and you report this to the testing agency.

Seeing you are from Canada, NeoCitran is not found in the USA but we have a similar product called Theraflu. NeoCitran and Benylin are two different medications. Neocitran as compared to Benylin is what we call shot gun therapy because it's a multifaceted drug, e.g., something for fever, nasal discharge, cough and allergy symptoms. Benylin on the other hand decreases mucus development.

Look for a cough and cold medicine that does not list Pseudoephedrine in the ingredients. ETOH or alcohol is not a problem for now but I would stop taking any product with alcohol 12 hours before the test to include using a mouthwash.

Any cough suppressant that does not contain codeine will be fine.

I wont be driving until next wednesday or thursday, but I still have to do the drug test which is why I am asking the question. (Not to sound defensive or rude here) If I was too sick to drive I most definately wouldnt be driving as I am well aware that it takes focus n a clear mind to keep these machines under control as my husband is my daily reminder of what these machines can do to a persons life after him n his co-worker's lives were forever changed at the hands of 2 careless drivers. I just want to be responsible in choices I make in medications as I am aware that different ones may affect my level of alertness as well as legalities such as the DOT required drug testing. Like I said I dont mean to be rude or sound rude, but honestly if I knew all about this I wouldnt be asking. But as drivers we are still human and sometimes will have to still drive even if we are not feeling the greatest and need to deal with it, but knowing that there comes a point that we are past being sick and become a hazard on the road.
