sorry if this is repeated but i can not find the answer anywhere. We are an electrical contractor that most of our field drivers will fall in exceptions so they wont need the ELD. We have 300 trucks that are on the road everyday most will be driven except. We do how ever have about 10 drivers that will be needing the e log every day that do our long hauls and move most the equipment. They will need to be able to use every truck with the elog. The question is does anyone know of a system that will easily work to swap truck to truck without having to install an elog in each truck. We would need to be able to take the e log truck to truck with our driver. We have tried a few companies that say they can do this and it never ends up working out.

The problem with that is we cant do that. All our trucks have certain uses dump truck, vac trucks, semis, digger trucks, bucket trucks, box trucks, flat beds, 1 tons, list goes on that's why this is so hard. I have 10 drivers that all they do is shuffle vehicles around the state and a lot of times other states and are trying to avoid getting 300 ELDs and paying for them is not needed for 10 guys.

I don't see any cheap solution. Whatever ELD system you use must be wired to the vehicle's ECM, a so called black box. The 10 or so drivers will probably use a bluetooth device, phone or tablet to record the HOS via the black box. But black box will still have to be in every vehicle they are likely to use.

What units have you tried and what trouble are you having?
There are units like Bigroad and RM's ELD 50 and such that should work with any heavy truck with a 9-pin diag. port. Just issue one to each of the 10 drivers.
The problem comes into play, I think is when you are running odb-II trucks.(1 ton and such) In that case I've heard of a few places saying "coming soon" but no clue as to when that will be.

I use people net. They have these portable units that are the size of a large tackle box with an 8 in tablet sticking out of them. It has a portable antenna. The box probably holds a battery I presume. Driver justs picks them up, takes them to his truck, and logs in. He finishes his shift, logs out, and takes the unit back to the office. I would think other brand ELD's would have these type of portable units.

Problem with that is it still needs to connect to the ecm to be legal.
I've seen the box you are talking about at our office. It's used for training and nothing else. That's what they are designed for I'm sure.

Your probably right. I've seen them but never used one. I talked to a driver yesterday. He was complaining to me about having to use a portable. I'll try to see what he is using.
