So last fall I went through Millis Transfer driving school in Trenton Ohio passed classroom portion with ease. Got on the truck and had some personal issues and was not able to obtain my CDL. For the most part the situation has resolved and looking at giving it another go. My question is should I go BACK to MTI or move on to another company? Still waiting to see if MTI will take me back and if I have to go back to school again. Looking at Roehl any other suggestions I'm in the Cincinnati Ohio area
You should figure out who offers you what you're looking for, find feedback on the carriers you had in mind, and make an informed decision. Some people have crappy experiences with 'good' carriers, some people have good experiences with 'crappy' carriers. Nobody can promise you what your experience will be. That rest partly on luck of the draw, partly on what your aims are and how realistic your expectations are, and partly on you and your own attributes. What drew you to Millis? Does the appeal still exist? What speaks to you regarding Roehl?
Well I put my boots on the ground there are 4 good size truck stops with in about 5 miles of my home so I would drive by and see a Millis Truck in the lot, I would go in and hope to find the driver, if they were eating, I would approach them and ask to pick their brain and then pay for their meal. They have newer equipment, decent starting pay, and the BIG Things was they had a CDL school near me, that I stayed at during the week and was home on the weekends. Roehl has a program (According to web site) where you can be out 7 days and home for 7, which honestly doesn't sound like you are going to make much money. I know you got to get the wheels turning if you want the checks to keep rolling as well. The other thing I have looked at those 2 companies is they both had Rider programs avail. One is sooner then the other, but both my father-in-law and son and other family members want to ride along for a week or two. Since Millis has a Terminal in Hamilton Ohio, and they do A LOT of hauling for Miller more opportunity to swing through kiss the door and slap the wife....(Or something like that)
Millis is ok unless you want longer runs. If you want the wife to ride and see California/Pacific Northwest/Florida, then go to Abilene Motor Express or Magnum Ltd. or Freymiller. These all hire new drivers even if the websites have "experience required." They hire new grads right out of school. Dutch Maid Logistics has rider program but not sure how far west they run; call and ask. They're in Willard,OH. On a side note, Dutch Maid Logistics has their own cdl school/training program.
Be sure to check the details of the rider program, as some only allow for immediate family members as riders.
