Hello everyone! First post here. I tried searching first but not quite the same scenarios. Maybe someone ran in to this problem after doing a transmission swap or conversion? 2005 Freightliner Columbia with the Mercedes Engine and ZF Meritor transmission that went haywire electronically. Freightliner dealer in Stockton, CA wanted $30,000 for the repair. After converting to a 10 speed manual and a whole lot of other problems the truck is ready to run but the odometer and speedometer are not working. However, ignition lights come one and the tachometer is working. Earlier we did go through the trucks wiring systems, took the whole dash off, underneath as well when looking what could have caused the ZF Meritor to malfunction. Thanks!
That's what I was leaning towards, but mechanic says it's not it, if the rest of the dash is working it makes no sense that anything else could be the problem but the wiring to and from the odometer/speedometer and speed sensor. Is it possible the ECU needs to be reprogrammed or reset after the swap, maybe its just glitching?
I'm not sure about that. I just know my personal experience. I had a 1999 international 9300 with a 18 speed eaton that had just been installed and I had the rpm guage working but no speedo, International told me it wouldn't be the speed sensor as it would make both guage not work. I always do the opposite of what anyone at international says so I went and checked it. For me it was 2 things, I had 2 of the wires rubbed through and touching and they hadn't adjusted the speed sensor properly.
I know nothing about the ZF transmissions, so this is a guess. Do they use a different speed sensor? You may just have to have some parameters changed to recognize a different speed signal after the trans swap.
The engine I have in there now, was from a parts truck, installed last year. When my ZF transmission quit I went back to the original parts truck and took the trany out of it so now they are reunited in my truck once again in their original configuration, just a different truck. The ZF did use a completely different system and TCU module, but those are all gone. That made me laugh, that is true often, opposite of what the dealer says. Will check for corrosion, rubbed out wires. I think if the speed sensor was dying it would be glitching, like in the post you posted Dustinbrock, the needles would jump on the speedometer, but with my problem the speedo and odo is just dead.
So the ECM is from you truck that had an auto trans? If so, we're back to the same question, does it need a parameter change to read the speed signal from the different transmission?
