    Most people fudge the speed limit some. I am wondering what truckers think about this. Can a truck safely go 5 mph above a speed limit?

    Depending on the actual speed limit and location. Trucks can safely do 70 over.

    Or where you asking if they got away with it, concerning the law?

    Yes, I am wondering how much a trucker can safely fudge the speed limit. In cars it seems up to 10 mph is safe.

    Depends on the state and the trooper,but its usually 5 over. Also most company trucks are governed between 60 and 65. Thats not a problem in most states.

    You can fudge exactly as much as your wallet can afford:biggrin_25525:

    Why does everyone consider the speed limits a flexible thing?They are a law.Now they allow some variance because of mechanical discrepancies,somehow that is twisted into "I'm allowed 5-10 mph above posted speed limit".:biggrin_25513:

    No you are not:biggrin_25510:And in my opinion if caught 5 miles over the limit and convicted should receive a minimum 2 year suspension of driving privileges:biggrin_25525:
    And for those with the anecdotal stories of how you got screwed by a ticket or officer,I do not care.You chose to push the limits.Deal with the consequences of your actions.

    There are thousands of drivers that complete their careers without a single citation due to their driving habits and skills.

    Tazz 99.9% of the judges have and do throw out speeding tickets that are 5 over the limit. Its tickets that are 10+ over that are expensive. Also 13+ over in most if not all the states are considered reckless driving. Luckily your opinon doesn't count in a court of law. BTW there is 2 verisons of the law. One is the letter of the law and the other is the spirit of the law. Most Leo's follow the spirit of the law.

    The rule about odometers says 5% over the limit.

    55=57.5
    60=63
    65=68.25

    this is why at 65 you can get away with 70 mph. Most highway patrols have been taught this and wont bother with anyone under 10 mph over the limit. Yet if you cant hold your lane, have a broken light, or appear to be on the phone, you can guarantee they will pull you over regardless of actual speed and use the speed as a reason FOR pulling you over.

    Be careful in Ohio! Looks like they've changed the 55MPH law on the interstate but not on the US Highways! I've heard lots of drivers complain about doing 57 and getting pulled over!

    Also, I got used to going 60-63. When I went 70, I was always trying to *get around the next guy*, and at the end of the day, I always felt wore-out.

    If I go 65, well now that's a rat race--everyone's in your way!

    At 60 I just let everyone around, it is so less hectic, and at the end of the day, I feel alright!

    I've never been looked at by a LEO at 5 over as far as I know. Haven't had a speeding ticket since 1974, and yes, I deserved it. I was doing 75 in a 55!! Now the cop cut me a big break, wrote me up for 62 in a 55. He said I had the vehicle under control, no lane weaving, tailgating, or anything unsafe other than the speed. Ofcourse, I wasn't an ####### to him either.
    Since then, every time I hear another driver crying about how "mean" Mr. Leo was to him, I think, and sometimes ask, "Driver, what were you doing to draw attention to yourself?" Now, the dumb ones will continue on with all kinds of BS.
    Although you ARE speeding at 5 over, you could be burned for it, but in my experience, the chances are slim as long you're not being dumb about it, such as tailgating, eating dinner balanced on the wheel, or yapping on that thing glued to your ear or face.:biggrin_25525:
