Normally this is achieved through joining a large carrier that offers a training program or accepts student drivers.

Once a carrier hires you they will assign a driver trainer to over see your on the job training. This usually will be for at least 1 month but could last up to 6 months or more depending on the company.

You will receive student wages or "training pay" while you are learning. This varies from company to company but the spread is usually between $50.00 per day and $100.00 per day.

Once you have achieved the required number of days, miles on the road and your trainer believes you have the skills needed to upgrade you will be given an upgrade test by the companies safety department. If you pass the test then you will be assigned your own truck and will start making money for yourself (usually on a pay per mile basis).
