Got my MC, DOT and IFTA, what the best way to look for a driver?

Hello Guys, For almost 3 years I´ve been leasing my truck to thrird parties, they all wanted to take advantage of my truck, ghost repairs, false fuel invoices and keep the truck like garbage.

I´m finally finishing all the paperwork to become an owner operator and I´m looking for a good driver to haul a flatbed, where would you guys suggest to find a driver?

 

I have actually had good luck with the state employment office. You can also post a help wanted with some of the trucking forums. Another possibility is to put up ad ad on local truck stop boards. Many have them near their driver's lounge.

Last time I tried Craiglist I got a driver who crash my truck 2 times and messed up the brakes, he even askedto.be paid for the 3 days he was driving it. The cost of the repairs were 2k.
Not a big fan of Craiglist anymore.

 

Make sure you get good resume's and check their background. Look at their car / truck , how they dress and hygiene , these are great indicators. Also make them get a current manifest of their CDL history , if they fail to provide it RUN! You may also try to get a young kid out of school and mold and train them yourself , pay them accordingly the way you would like to be payed. There is nothing wrong with Craig's list. Good luck

 

Didnt posting on craigslist for help wanted use to be free? Was on there a couple days ago and there is a fee now?

 

This says it all. Just find some driver you can get to work on a 1099 and screw him. Of course you have to pay the driver. Man up.

 

wait til you do back ground, drug screen, insurance, etc... that stuff isnt free either. Sound like you learned very well from your previous employer

 

Im sure im not the only person who noticed "he even wanted to be paid for the three days he worked"...
Why do you own a truck if you dont drive it?
Let me guess what your business model is eboosted.

1). Find a 2001 Freightliner with 1,100,000 miles on Truck Paper.
2).. Borrow the $500 downpayment to buy that $9,000 truck.
3). Get authority.
4). Get on a few load boards, call about some freight, do the math, figure out you're going to profit $150 on this load that will take 3 days.
5). Book the load.
6). find a monkey to hold your steering wheel for a few months at a time while you expect him to treat your truck like you would if you knew how to drive one.

The revolving door never stops spinning........

FYI, That business model is tried about a million times a year, it NEVER works, 0 for 1,000,000 so far.

 

I don't think the OP was wrong in asking for some advice here.
I would stay away from Craigslist though....many things are bogus that are posted there and the quaility
of applicants can be equally the same.

I own my own rig/trailer outright and run it when I want. I am not chasing any bank note.
I carry my own MC cause if I was leased to someone I'm sure they'd expect me to run on THEIR schedule.
Yea, I have been asked why I don't hire a driver to run it during the times I don't want to run, but most guys will never
take care of a truck as well as the owner would.

That has to factor into some expectation when hiring someone....
