GPS or GPS program for trucks?

What is the best GPS system or programs for laptops for trucks? I have been driving local for the past 10+ yrs and i just took a job running 11 western and was curious as to what system drivers are using. I appreciate any help you can give me.

 

The Rand McNally Trucker's Road Atlas, spiral bound combined with mapquest to check locations.

 

I have been researching this very question as I am about to purchase my first GPS. The Garmin Nuvi 465T seems to have the greatest number of positive feedback from what I have read.

I have used cell phones and the rand McNally Truckers atlas since I started driving in February of 1992. It has served me well over the years. I think it is time I upgrade and take advantage of some of this new technology.

Of course there is an electronics section to this forum and you can read up on some of the new entrants to the GPS market.

 

I have a tomtom, but I don't navigate from it, it makes to many mistakes. I go off the atlas. The gps is just a tool that shows me about how far I am from my destination (time wise) and a heads up on upcoming street names.

 

I am glad you are wise enough not to rely on the tomtom as it is designed for cars and not big trucks.

The only problem with the truck GPS systems is the price. When they first started coming out a few years back they were up around $600.00 Now I think they have dropped to about half that price (depending upon where you buy it of course. Ebay seems to be the cheapest I have found so far).

 

I wouldn't throw away your atlas though.

 

She is absolutely right! The Motor carriers atlas will give you all kinds of details that a gps will not such as the acceptable axle weights for each state and the bridge laws just to name a couple.

 

I wish i had the money to get the rand mcnally truckers gps. But then again, I wouldn't trust it anyway. And being a company driver, i am supposed to take the company routes anyway.

Not worth the cost I figure, sense I just use the gps to help me give acurate ETA and PTA's

With the technology now i was kind of wanting to be a little lazy and not have to go back to the atlas searching, I did enough of it about 18 yrs ago when i drove longhaul.
