My wife and I are considering living in the truck after we have been on the road for 3 or 4 months. We are discussing what a typical "hometime" might be like if we took it anywhere we wanted, like if freight were slow, and we had the weekend to wait for a load to haul. My imagination is active, so bear with me..... I told my wife if we were stuck somewhere without a load for the weekend, say Indy, or Raleigh, or Denver, that we would rent a car and get a hotel room and see some shows and partake in some of the local fare. I also commented that this would might happen 4 of 5 times a year, and that we could be without a load double or triple times more than those 4 or 5 times. Can any of you comment on some great weekends you've had while waiting on mondays load? Does my idea of "hometime anywhere" sound feasible?
In '73 me and a bedbug hauler were both broke down in Boise, ID. We rented a VW Beetle for $5/day and went off-roading. Anybody from Boise knows the big cross on top of the plateau on the east side of town... we drove up and down that hill a dozen times, crossed several streams on a motorcycle course, went up to Idaho Falls with a few girls we met... I've gone snowmobiling on Rabbit Ears Pass outside of Steamboat Springs, went to the 3rd last ball game at Tiger Stadium, attended the '79 Southern 500 at Darlington, the '74 World 600 at Charlotte, watched a young Dale Earnhardt drive a Ford (!) at Metrolina Speedway in Charlotte, saw a NASCAR Modified race at Bowman Grey Stadium in Winston-Salem, went off shore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, greyhound racing at West Palm Beach Kennel Club, drove one lap in a sprint car at a World of Outlaws race in illinois in '79, went to the Bonneville Land Speed Trials on the salt flats in Utah in '80 and '02, got a tour of the KW plant in Seattle, made a few trips to Disneyland... lots more.
I did have a consignee hold me over one time in Denver from Friday morning to Monday morning. With their factory closed on weekends, I decided to leave the truck there at their dock which had security, cab it to the airport, and fly home to San Diego for the weekend. It cost me a few $$$, but was worth it.
