Guess its time for an overhead to be done on my C-16!!!

Recently purchased a 2000 W900L with a C-16 600HP. I bought it back in April 2013 and just recently leased it onto a company. I'm on my 3rd run with the truck and now I'm seeing green tint in my fresh oil. I took the truck to TA to get it serviced right before I hit the road and had Rotella oil with a gallon of Lucas put in it with Caterpillar filters and truck is also equipped with a Gulf-Coast Oil Bypass system so I had those 2 filters changed as well. The old oil that was in the truck was completely black. According to the sticker on windshield the oil had about 20K+ miles on it and I don't even know what kind of oil he had in here. So I checked my oil the other day and started seeing a greenish tint on areas of my dipstick.. Wiped it off and checked oil again and same thing. So I'm trying to determine if its diesel or coolant. Iv tried smelling it but it doesn't really smell, just smells like used motor oil from a diesel. So ill be delivering my last stop tomorrow in Laredo, TX. Thinking about finding a Caterpillar Shop down there and seeing what they say. Will probably end up having the overhead dun on the truck. Any other suggestions on what may be the greenish tint??

 

Get an oil sample done that will tell you everything you need to know

 

cant really tell anything from that pic. if it was coolant your oil would be gray. only way to know what if anything is going on you should have a oil sample done. running the rack shouldn't have a effect one way or the other on the oil.

This is the 1st truck iv owned so still new on where the best places to get certain things done. Was thinking about going to a SpeedCo for oil sample but figured I would probably be better off just letting CAT do the oil sample. Any ideas on that??

 

That oil looks very clean for oil that is even 1000 miles old.
What concerns me is not so much the green (no idea what it is) but what appears to be diesel dilution.
Oil is blacker then that usually.
A way we used to check for this was to drip a drop of oil on a napkin or piece of newspaper.
If it just made a black drop it was generally okay.
If the black drop got surrounded by a more transparent wet mark like the color I see in your photo it was usually diesel in the oil as it separates and spreads differently.

As stated have an oil sample done.

 

20k on oil isn't that bad some go to 25k google oil sample no need to change ur oil every 15 k miles

 

don't use speedco for an oil sample, they don't have the training and don't follow proper lab protocols. go to cat for one, or call up one of the oil analysis companies, you can ship them your sample, a bit of a pain, but the best way.

 

If you follow Kevin Rutherfords advice then Polaris Labs is a good one to use. They will email you the results and if you have any questions you can call them. You can google them and it will give you the info you need.

 

The green tint could be from the additive that you put in the oil. Just a question, but why are you putting an additive into the oil? What are you looking to control/change/improve with the additive?
