Got a hazmat road test Monday for a tanker Co. I've taken plenty of road tests but never since I got my hazmat endorsement. Other than flashers and stopping 15-50 feet before RR tracks is there anything else I need to know specific to the hazmat part of it?
Make sure you instantly light up a smoke when you are doing you pre-trip. Also while you are driving. This is a very important task they do not teach you ahead of time
You'll need to roll your windows down, which will allow you to listen for train horns. Don't shift gears while crossing the tracks (Which is something you shouldn't do period, but especially true when carrying hazmat).
Are you going to be pulling a loaded tanker? Either way, make no sudden moves. Accelerate slowly, approach turns with caution. If you are placarded stop at RR crossings. They may want you to stop anyway. As above, window down AND look both ways before proceeding. Pay attention to signs saying HC inside a red circle with a slash. Will usually be through the center of a city. Relax and good luck.
They are probably going to ask you what do you do if you rolled the truck in a ditch. What does ERG means and do you know how to use it. Know how to read and fill out a hazardous shipping manifest. Know how to placard a truck. Besides 911, who else must you contact if you spilled your load? What hazmat loads are compatible with other hazmat.
