I always ask the carrier to send authorized routing over the Qualcomm. reminding them of what placards are on, hm materials and quantities. If it seems reasonable I go the companies prescribed route, if not or I'm a little unsure about the route, i'm on the phone to safety to get a clarification or adjustment. If you're working for a larger company and their safety department wants to put the routing decisions solely on the driver, you need to drive elsewhere. Things (rules/regs) change almost monthly and the carrier's safety director (and Qualcomm's map service provider) is the one who get these notices and is responsible for keeping current, not the individual drivers. http://www.paturnpike.com/trucking/placard.aspx
If you are carrying bulk then you would not be allowed in the tunnels. I carried Hazmat, but not bulk and I was allowed threw the tunnels. The link in the post above is excellent.... mark
The information we really need is what kind of hazmat (what is it?, UN number?) and what kind and size of packages, etc, etc,etc details are important.
