Question: Can I take the Hazmat endorsement and background check/fingerprints with only a Commercial Learner's Permit or do I need to wait until I have my Class A CDL in hand prior to taking the endorsement test at NYS DMV and getting fingerprinted? I ask because I hear differing answers. The NYS DMV website says that: "Acceptable identification documents for Hazmat and Fingerprinting includes: Identification document must be valid and not expired. New York State Commercial Driver’s License Foreign passport Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card (Form I-551) U.S. Passport Not sure if the first point above includes the CLP or only a CDL. I'll be road testing for my Class A in January, but want to have all of my endorsements ASAP, prior to starting employment if possible. Thanks everyone!
Many drivers get their Hazmat with their initial CDL. Test for as many endorsements as possible at time of your initial CDL, it's easier that way. Fewer trips to DMV
In NY you can test for it and do the background check with a permit, but the endorsement won't be added until you receive your license.
I tested for all of my endorsements at the same time as my CLP. This was in Texas. My CDL A hard copy is currently sitting at home with the rest of my mail, but I have been informed they are all on there. They are all on my paper CDL in my wallet as well.
