I already asked in the O/O, before I seen this place, but I DID want to ask an O/O because I'm selling my house, and I want to buy a rig, and DRIVE. I have no family, nothing to come home to, so why not do what I've wanted for a LONG time.. Here is a list of my questions. I am open to ALL answers, comments, good and bad.. I am in southern california. What is a good school to go to. I talked to a few people at United, but they seem more into the money than teaching.... What is a good basic rig for a beginner. Nothing fancy, sleeper cab a MUST (as I wont have a place to live after I sell my house, and save for another) Are there any schools out there that you don't pay to go until you graduate?? If you're new to trucking, what would you say is the "hardest" part of becoming a trucker?? If you've been a trucker for your whole life, would you do it again?? How would you do it?? Thanks again for letting me ask these questions. I look forward to all the advise
There's a search button on top, if you use it, you will find everything and MORE of what your looking for and you might get some answer's here to, but I recommend the search button and... BEWARE !!!, Your going to get ALOT of NEGATIVE feedback due to you trying to sell your home for a truck. I'll be the first to tell you, DON"T DO IT !!!!
Just do it........with an open mind, but don't spend ALL your $$$$ for the truck. Next, don't worry about a school if you are buying a truck. Buy the truck, get a permit, and I'll teach you to drive it for a very small fee. I'm serious. See, you just saved $4 grand. PM me.
You know nothing about trucking but you want to sell your home and buy a truck? Good luck with that. Get your CDL, do some time as a company driver. Make sure it is the life for you.
Highly suggest you go to school and drive company for a year or so. First off most insurance companies aren't going to insure you and if you find one it will probably cost more than the truck itself! Second off, you are going to spend all that money on a truck and you don't even know if you will like truck driving! Trucking by no means is just driving. Besides the driving there is a hell of lot you need to know about the industry if you want to be even remotely successful. Where are you going to get your loads? Are you just going to hire some Joe Smoe to find them for you? For every legitimate broker there is non-legitimate broker. Do you know the difference and how they operate? Do you know what to charge for fuel surcharge? Do you know what the current freight rates are? Do you know how to fix and maintain your own rig? One breakdown could easily cost you upwards of $10,000. What are you going to do for a trailer? I know you don't know the answers to these questions and I don't expect you too. Just an example of some of the things that you need to know to be a successful owner operator. Can you do it? Sure. Are you going to make money and be successful? NO! Most likely, no. Do yourself a HUGE favor, if you are very serious about becoming an O.O go to school and then get a good company job for a year or two and learn everything and anything you can about the biz including how to run a business. I think once you become a company driver you will be very happy that you didn't jump into buying your own.
Now that's an offer you can't refuse !!! Not only that but you'll have a mentor at the same time, now that's a bargain.
