I have posted very little, but have gained a lot of valuable knowledge and info from reading this forum! I am single and looking to relocate to the Florence, SC area so that I can see my child more often and easily than I can living in Va. I am practically debt-free. I have my class B and am currently driving a school bus in addition to my regular job. I am scheduled to start class to upgrade to a Class A in June. Before class starts, I plan to add my tanker endorsement and hazmat to my existing Class B. I am interested in tankers and have talked to Schneider as I understand they have great tanker training and will take you straight from school. Operating out of Charleston, SC or Charlotte, NC will also put me in close proximity to where I want to live. There is nothing negative on my driving record for the last 10 years. Nothing on my criminal background. My passport is expired and I also plan to renew that. I want to be as equipped as possible when I finish school so I can concentrate on my training. I have a pre-hire from Schneider, but they want to wait to further process my app until I start school. I am open to driving flatbed or box if necessary, but I believe that I have what it takes for tanker and I should be able to make better money doing that. Any suggestions for additional companies in the SC area or what I can do to better prepare myself would be greatly appreciated.
Get the TWIC ID Card. You need this pulling tankers for entry to sea ports, military bases, chemical plants. Get in reasonable shape; brisk walking, stair steps, run in place, etc. Tanker companies check your heart rate and blood pressure and if they're not right, will send you home. Schneider Bulk Superior Carriers Groendyke Transport CTL Transportation SVTN Tidewater Transit Trimac Transportation All hire new CDL grads, even though the website may have "experience required."
Mike will need his blood pressure at 140/90 max, I think pulse commesurate with age, to get his medical card.
Don't get your haz-mat endorsement added to your license till you move to the state you plan to live in and have your CDL A in or you will likely have to do it all over again..
Should not need to do it over. Just have to pay for the endorsement again anytime you move. Same with any endorsement.
Wrong. Hazmat does not transfer per FMCSA. You have to take the written test, pay for the fingerprinting and background check the same as you did the last time. Another money grab.
Hate how they are always changing things. Must have changed when they added the finger printing and stuff. I had it in 3 states in the early 90s, never took test again. Let it go when it was time to re-certify. Did not need it, so why waste the 15 bucks to renew. Much more now.
I have heard both ways about transferring my Hazmat. I emailed SC DMV and got this response: In response to your question, you will be able to transfer your HAZMAT once you have established residency in SC. Thank you. However, I know that just because they work for DMV doesn't mean that they know the answers. I hate to put the money out twice, but since I don't plan on moving until after I'm hired and go through training, I don't won't to miss out on training opportunities by not having my Hazmat.
