High Idle w/ Engine Fan on for 10 hours..????

When I high idle at night, the engine fan kicks on and off constantly. Doesn't happen when I low idle, but I am not allowed to low idle. High idle or shut it off is what the boss says.

Can I leave the engine fan on for 6-7 hours while I sleep?

 

Switch the fan on, just dont forget to flip the thing off after PTI or fuel mi. will drop?

The truck is doing what it's supposed to do....the fan is cycling to regulate the engine temp. Don't know what the mfgs. recommendations are for high idle but I would imagine it would be harder to sleep at high idle. Ask your boss why.

My fuel mileage is already bad but I just got a raise so the boss must like that I squeek out 1-2 more loads a week than conserve fuel.

Leaving the fan on constantly is better for your A/C in hot conditions.

 

yep. when I WAS O.T.R. I would turn on manual fan switch to keep it from cycling on/off. it keeps the fan solenoid from going out due to all the cycling on/off. the high idle to some with detroits anyway are thought to keep the oil circulating properly to lubricate everything especially the bull gear area, is what I hear.

 

I have never liked idling any engine for extended periods. If my old B model cat is gonna run a while I snooze and it usually does its at about 800-900 rpm, not 650.

 

First off the high idle when sitting for long periods of time is done to keep the engine warm and not wash down the cylinders by excessive fuelling, nothing else.

Second the fan cycling is done when the a/c is on and the condenser temps reach a certain level so most of the time it is because someone left their a/c running on the truck so they can sleep.

Third, as someone who has sat next to people with LOUD trucks and having that happen all night long, many can't get sleep and some think it is very rude. There is nothing like parking in an area where no one is idling, opening the windows for a good breeze and then have someone park in the group with their truck running at 1000 rpms and the fan cycling all night long.
