im really not understanding this, why? dont no. so sometimes u dont have to do a 34hr restart, cuz some how on the 8th day u get back the same hours as the 1st day u started ur 70 hr week? could someone really break it down as low as u can. ( had people explain to me face to face and i dont seem to get it all ) thank you......
Much of it is a matter of personal preference. But anytime you can manage to get a restart, you don't need to concern yourself with the 70 hour limits and totaling your last 8 days (for a while), all you need to worry about is your 14/11 rules, is a good thing and frees you up to rack up some good miles quickly if the loads allow. How important a restart is depends on the type of loads you haul and how much freight you have, and if you like to (can) work hard during the week and have time off on weekends. You never HAVE to do a reset unless your DM or company wants you to do a reset because they know they are going to keep you very busy following the reset and don't want to worry 70 hour limitations. But to come within an hour or two of getting a restart but failing to do so is just dumb IMHO.
There's no 70 hour week. It is 70 hours in 8 days. If you divide 70 by 8 you get 8.75. So if you work exactly 8.75 hours every day you will never have more than 70 hours in an 8 day period. If you average exactly 10 hours a day you will use all 70 hours in 7 days. If you did that you would then take a 34 hour reset. A 34 hour reset if a full day off plus the 10 hours off duty required each day. Once the 34 hour reset is completed you start at 0 hours so the hours worked in the previous 7 don't count against your 70 in 8. So in theory a person running 10 a day and a person running 8.75 a day will end up with the same amount of time worked but the one doing the 10 will have a full day off every 8 days and the other will never have a day off. The other option is to work more than 10 a day and reset more often. Once the new rules come into effect, next summer I believe, you will only be able to reset once each week and then the perfect average to get the most work time would be 11.5 hours each day. The reality in most cases is that the loads will determine just what type of schedule or average you will run.
I'm new here and simply wanted to thank TinyTim for a posting that was VERY helpful to me. Briefly, I'm starting school on 5/21 and have been preparing for taking the CDL Permit tests for GK; Combination; and AB later this week. In the meantime, I've been trying to be prepared for school and OTR training and have been VERY confused by the HOS rules in general and thanks to you and this thread it's finally becoming clear to me. Thank you once again! Bob
Ok thx. Makes Lil more sense. I guess ill see what happens tomorrow since im on elogs...but yeah i guess ur correct wit the whole, what kinda of loads ur gettin...
Yeah, when you do a re-cap on your log book, you can see how many hours you will pick up each day for the previous 7 days. So you may not need a 34 reset, if you will be picking up 9's, 10's etc for the next few days. That could make a difference with keeping a sweet load or having to lose it to another truck. Even if you don't have any hours the next day to pick up, you will probably have some the second day, which could mean getting loaded and rolling sooner. Know how to log, maximize your driving hours/log and keep rolling.
