How car dealer handles a panhandler: At first, 'We tried to be polite'
A Michigan car dealership used an unusual approach to warn the public about a panhandler - and has received an outpouring of support on social media for it.

Brighton Honda in Brighton, Mich., is near a busy intersection and offramp from I-96, a spot where two men believed to be a father and son panhandled for a year, one of them right in front of the Honda store.

"We tried to be polite," dealership general manager Bert Justice told Automotive News. So the dealership offered one of the men a job as a porter. The panhandler declined, saying he made twice as much doing what he was doing.

The men then tried not to be polite, Justice said, with heated words between them and passing drivers, and the older man exposing himself to urinate into a cup in front of motorists.

So on Tuesday, the dealership erected a sign that said:
"Please do not give anything to this panhandler. We offered him a full-time job at $10.00/HR. He said 'I make more than any of you,' and he did not want a job, please donate to a more worthy cause."

The sign has made the rounds on social media, including Facebook and a high-ranking post on Reddit, where 85,000 people have liked the post and more than 7,000 have commented.

Morgan Holt of nearby Howell, Mich., said she drives by on her way to work and has seen the man outside of the dealership for the past two years. She posted a photo of the sign on social media.
WHMI-FM reported that some residents of Livingston County, which is north of Ann Arbor, reported they've seen the man and two others park a car down the road then walk to the exit ramp, and that they are often rude, "yelling at people for not giving them anything" or declining food when offered instead of money. The radio station reported that state police had arrested a father and son in that area on investigation of disorderly conduct and vagrancy. Another Reddit post showed a photo of a man being handcuffed.

It's amazing how hard some people will work to avoid having to work. Some of these panhandlers will stand there for 10-12 hrs a day. They know plenty of folks will give them a few dollars so they can feel good without having to truly do anything.

I prefer to donate time and effort to causes that are important to me, and those are more valuable to me than money.

Probably does make more money than anyone at that dealer. How many cars go by that intersection every ten minutes? How many people hand them a dollar out of those?.... wouldn't take much. I'd bet on $20-40/hr all tax free

Unless I was both exceptionally and desperately in need, I personally would be way too EMBARRASSED to go out and publicly panhandle from other people.

I have offered food to panhandlers in the past. Some do appreciate it, others get outright rude if you don't give them money. I no longer give money, but instead offer to pay for full meals.

Also, if someone needs gas for their car, I will offer to fill their gas tanks for them, rather than giving them the actual cash to do so. Believe it or not, some will turn down the offer of my filling the gas tank for them.

I do believe in helping out. I just do not give out cash anymore. Sadly & unfortunately, this really does tick off a lot of panhandlers.

I was at Sparks, NV and a young man asked me for gas money so he could get home from Lake Tahoe, I told him no and then he asked me if I had a lighter he could have.
Some people expect others to give to them

@bzinger You are NOT the type, you are a man with SELF RESPECT who takes pride in what you do.

I have witnessed so many leave a common panhandling spot, walk a number of blocks and shed the cover garments to hop into 50K car and drive home at rush hour in the afternoon.

I have also been eroded emotionally by the sheer numbers of the needy who have become predatory and parasitical. Back home in Baltimore there used to be a old tactic in which a street waif hauls out a squeezee and starts cleaning your glass while you are trapped at the light. because he has many friends blocking your path until you hand over a few dollars... After about 15 lights of this on St Pauls with 5 more to go running later and later to work... You learn not to work downtown anymore. You took your labor else where.

Regarding the erosion of emotions, after going into certain places around the USA I am lucky to come out with all my parts in one peice but not mentally intact. Ive gone into the markets all the time because I don't know any better. I brought my team spouse into a market one time because I was too stupid. Does that make sense? They would prey on her and eliminate me if I got into the middle. So. no more markets for me. Or her or anyone.

And you wonder why they need the immigrant to deliver into the market with that food and meat the city needs to eat today. You aint getting me in there, not for a thousand dollars a mile. No siree. But you can get a immigrant in there becuase chances are it's like a home coming due to gang connections, racial connections and so on. Understand? There is big difference.

I finally simply do not take care of the bums or freeloaders anymore. If they want it, they get a job and go earn it. If working 40 hours lawful is impossible because they are convicted felons etc. To me that would be a perfect cover to do other dark economy work like running guns or dope or migrants etc. Getting arrested for them is not a problem. They'll get out again in time to reoffend again. And again. and again.

What does that make us a society that has utterly and totally failed on so many levels since world war two. We have been brought to our knees just as effectively as if we were properly invaded by a ten million plus horde of barbarians just the same. It only took a little longer.
