How do you get drivers to move loads?

    I am a new agent and want to get some good carriers to move the loads. Getting good loads doesn't seem to be the problem just finding good carriers. How do I contact the most carriers. What are the best load boards. If I have to call carriers where do you suggest I start? Can you explain how come in the trucking job magazine they pay .55¢-1.00/mile . There is such a big gap What are the best ways to get a good rate or should I call some carriers directly and use the average. Any info would be helpful.

    Whatever the price is for a gallon of diesel that should be your rate per mile. You will always have available trucks.

    OK. But the rate website is less than that per mile. How can this be?

    Rates are determined by market forces, (supply and demand).

    Truck/load ratio is the factor.

    Bunch of loads, but no trucks?? Truckers market.

    Bunch of trucks, but no loads?? Shippers market.

    Rate is also determined by value of load, or equipment required to haul it.

    Lots of things influence rates.

    Time of day, day of week, time of year....

    All factors.

    "Rate website"? You mean the rate indices on the load boards? If you push freight at those rates, count on NEVER getting good carriers. The rate index uses cooked numbers submitted by companies with a vested interest in making sure those numbers stay low. The majority of carriers you'll get whom take those rates are the same carriers that will give you service worth the cheap pay. Service failures, trashy equipment, etc. Not all of them, some are just new carriers that don't have any contacts established for decent rates, and think it's normal for 44,000 pounds of widgets to be hauled across the country at $1.10 per mile. I can't even catch a taxi to haul my 200 pound butt around town for $1.10, let alone 44,000 pounds.

    It's so simple, learned this 30 years ago. Formula is, What it costs ME to get it there, + YOUR rate + a good wage for me.

    Or if it is a back-haul just to get me to a better paying load, I will do it for the cost of fuel or less maybe even for free..hahaha yea right ..but there are some O/O that do this...
