How does your company calculate your paid vacation time?

The company I'm with now pays vacation time based on your last years TAXABLE income divided by 52.

The only thing about that is that my company pays us per diem too, which as you all know drives down what your taxable income is. It kind of screws the drivers when it comes to paid vacation time and would be better if they did it based off from your GROSS income, because per diem adds up to so much per year.

To give clarity, the vacation that I just got paid for was $450 gross. When I was with my trainer 2 years ago fresh out of CDL school, I got paid $500 gross per week as a flat rate for the 4 weeks or so that I was with my trainer. Nobody would be OTR for $450 gross per week. I'm not complaining because vacation is vacation, but you see how this is kind of shorting the driver in that it's nowhere near close to what a normal 70 hour work week paycheck would be?

Anyways, I was just wondering if this was the norm in this industry? Does it usually vary from OTR to local? Drivers, how does you company calculate your paid vacation time?

1. Sector (LTL, tanker, flatbed, reefer, dry van, you can get specific like LTL linehaul or LTL P&D, etc. etc.)

2. How are you paid - Hourly, Accessorial, Salary, CPM or a combination of those?

3. Is your company union or not?

My last carrier figured it based on several things. I honestly don't remember how they did it. I know I made $550 for that week.

 

1/10th of 5%, of the 25th anniversary of your hiring, and then 2/42 nd's of a penny found on the ground.

 

I was hourly and they paid 40 hours for the week.
Everyone worked at least 60 but we only got 40.

 

2 weeks or 80 hours during 1st year, then add a week after 3 years and another week after 5 years. It pays whatever your hourly rate is.

 

Swift does not base it on income, but time with the company.
A separate check is issued, usually 5-10 days after your anniversary date.

My first year I got $400.
My second year it was $1,000.
My 5th year it went to $1800, and has stayed the same ever since.
I just completed my 10th year.

 

Vacation pay is calculated each January and it's based on how much you earned in the previous year. I believe it's gross pay minus bonuses and holiday pay. They take that number and break it down to an hourly rate by dividing it by 52 weeks and then by 40 hours. This year I'm around $36/hr.

LTL linehaul, paid mostly cpm but also fixed task pay and a little bit of hourly. Non-union.
