I've only been a member of the forum for about 7 weeks but during that time I've read hundreds and hundreds of posts (maybe thousands). I'm a wannabe so I've been looking for good information and suggestions and I've found both. Now, how did I know that what I've found is good information? How did I know that I've found good suggestions? Here's my rule of thumb: I simply look at the number of times the poster has been thanked relative to the number of posts that particular poster has put out there for consumption and consideration. It's in their profile to the right of their "forum name" at the top of the post.

This is not a sure-fire method but I've found that using it keeps me more focused as I'm reading posts. I've learned that, 1) It saves me time because I can zero in on posts by those often-thanked members, 2) I can be confident that what they have to say has merit, 3) I can, with more confidence, adjust my way of thinking about certain issues, companies, methodologies, etc, and 4) I can be sure I'm making the best use of my time. Although, more often than not, I navigate around the forum just looking for stuff to entertain me or wake up my brain.

Just my .02 cents worth - oops, I forgot for a second that I'm a wannbe. Make that my .01 cents worth!

    Interesting LOL
The problem is we have only had the thank you feature for a year or so
Your theory wouldn't apply to long term members:biggrin_25511:

After you are on here for a while you can figure out the members that are the most helpfull.
Some members have knowledge is specific areas. That is what I like about the Forum.
Once you are on here for a while you will get an understanding of the posters. You will learn if they are an O/O,who they drive for, what kind of trailer they pull.
I have also found that if some one post BAD INFORMATION on the forum they will be called out on it.
It is a good Forum. Read and learn. Be open minded and use your oun brain and instinsts to sort out the information.

Now you went and did it . All the posters nobody listens to are going to get together and start thanking each other so we'll pay attention to them . Actually , I've seen that . Two or more members with the same wrong opinion will go on and on and thank each other for their nonsense postings . We suspect some have created a second member to agree with themselves when nobody else would .

    Olbnewbie...

Like others have said, that is a unreliable system. I have seen members thank each other for attacking other members.

    So whats your other name...:biggrin_2555:.
Alot of people will thank others for making a joke or busting on someone (in a friendly way) also. So your theory isn't really gonna work.

But if I was you, I wouldn't believe me, I'm full of it and don't know anything, just ask me I'll tell you...:biggrin_25526:

We used to have the reputation turned on, until people started abusing it, and giving negative rep points for "opinions" not bad advice. It caused a lot of problems. Especially in the politics section.

There's really no way to know if the thanks was for posting a joke that someone liked, or a helpful post, or if someone, like mentioned earlier is trying to boost someones reputation. You have to basically read and make your decision from there.

    JustSonny and jtrnr1951 Thank this.
