How should days off be counted with Werner.

My brother is a new driver with Werner. He comes to the Atlanta terminal, but lives in Florida. Right now he gets shuttled to the Florida terminal for his off days. He drove 5 weeks, and was supposed to get 5 days off, but it looks like they are counting the shuttle days. Is this normal? (He dropped his rig Sunday and got shuttled home Monday and they told him he had to shuttle back today, Friday.)

 

What do you mean shuttled? Someone drives him or he drives himself? Is he logged off duty during the trip to Florida? I would think his time off starts when he parks his truck at the Atlanta terminal.

 

Your brother is getting the shaft.

Tell him to find a job closer to home where he will be home more than 1 week out of every 6. He basically gets home once every two months and Werner wants to count transit time toward his days off? He should really be looking for something else.

Werner is taking advantage of him. Especially as he is staying out for such a long period of time.

 

He lives in Florida. Lots of drivers on these forums that live in Florida have trouble getting in and out. He may like to stay out that long to maximize days off. Werner may also be one of the few companies that will hire him. Let's not jump to conclusions.

 

Its sad , but time off begins when you hit that bottom line.

 

Here in lies the problem with drivers. A driver spends 5 weeks in a truck and people think it's reasonable for him to be home for 3 days?

Any driver that sees this as equitable is generally the driver that will be complaining about the company within the next 6months on how they got shafted.
If a driver stays out 5 weeks and get 3 days at home I can almost guarantee you that the company sees that driver as "soft" and ripe for being taken advantage then eventually they will take advantage of him and most likely in the end fire him for insubordination.

When a driver puts themselves in this type of scenario they are going to lose in the end.
We see it every day on here,drivers crying about ALL the #### companies pulled on them........yet they stayed around for more ####.

If he stays without speaking up he deserves what he gets.

 

I'd call your fleet manager and tell him you'll catch a shuttle back on Sunday, since your suppose to have 5 days of HOME time. If he/she wont budge, I wouldn't lose my job over it ... but id definately start looking for another company. Probably one that has a terminal in florida, or one that lets you bobtail home.

 

I never said I think its reasonable. We don't have all the facts. He may have accepted those terms. The driver is not asking, his brother is. Nobody is being taken advantage of if this was the deal discussed between the driver and Werner.

Like I said before, this scenario may have been his only option.

 

Negative...I'd be getting 5 days at home or looking elsewhere. I've even taken more before, but always ask for it if I needed it. I so don't miss working like that. Being home every weekend is so much nicer.
