how the h can i get a local job

Ok i need 6 more months with crst. I would like to drive dump trucks school bus or city. i went and got my class a because i didnt know any other way but crst. now my question is how do i get something local. I want my kids to know me. I could try and do 2 years and drive a school bus i dont know so i ask you guys how should i play this.

when i was on unemployment last year my case worker said the sad fact is 75% of people find jobs thru connections of others already working there. she was referring to ppl not getting hired thru job fairs etc and why newbies to trucking end up otr

 

School bus- Laidlaw/ First Student they train for free and hire anyone
Dump Trucks- drive to near by local dirt haulers and apply
City- good luck

 

I know it is tough to do if you are out on the road all the time. But during your home time, get out there and make personal contact with the companies you are interested in. Knocking on doors is still one of the most likely ways of getting a job that you want.

 

What do you mean when you say you need 6 more months with CRST? Are you under contract with them? How much experience do you have right now?

I will second the craigslist recommendation. Its been a good source for me for finding local work. I would also recommend looking at driver lease (i.e. temp) agencies if you've got enough experience to get in their door. I was hired by my current company after being assigned there by the temp agency I previously worked for.

Working for the temp agency gave me mon-fri all local driving work for a bunch of different local companies. This did several things for me. It gave me contacts at several local companies. So if any of them had a permanent position open up, the people in charge already knew me by name and liked me i.e. my foot was already in the door. And it allowed me to get to know each of them. IOW I now know exactly what its like to work for a bunch of different local companies. I know what their loads are like, I know what their routes and schedules are like and I know what the 'mood' is like among the employees at each. So it allowed me to make a very informed and confident decision when my current company offered to hire me.

If I had to do it over again, I'd go the temp agency route in a heartbeat.

 

School Bus? Really?

Most people work jobs for money. Not much of that when I looked at school bus driving. I think it was maybe $15 an hour, 3 hours in the morning, then off duty for about 4-6 then another three in the afternoon.

If you do not live very close to the terminal you end up sitting in the "Driver Trailer" watching a TV with whatever over the air channels come in, and chatting with the grumpy 50 and 60 year other drivers...

but that was just what I saw. I am sure not all places are like that.

I thought it was babysitting a bunch of rowdy ungrateful little brats.

When I got chewed out for an asst principal taking a kid off my bus for hanging out the window and smoking with his buddy, I decided it was time to never go back to school bus.

It worked good for my schedule while I was in college, about it.
