hi, thinking of purchasing a truck from an Owner Operator in TX. Wondering, how would you go about bring it back to your state? I live in CA and since I can't register it til I get back, I am wondering how I can drive it back?

Take this for whats its worth ... I just bought a truck in another state myself and did alot of googling and ph calling.. the answer I keep getting is .. as long as you have a bill of sale and proof of insurance you can legally bobtail the truck home.. Iam not not a 100% certain this is right .. I am still looking for set in stone facts before I try it.. Hopefully somebody on here can verify this

Same here, I am only crossing 2 states but NM and AZ both said I just need states permits that can be purchased at the scale

My first truck I bought out WV and he left his plate on it. I drove the truck home and sent the plate back to him so he could turn it in. Second truck I bought in PA. I just drove it back avoiding the scales. Third truck came from western MT and since I already had the VIN for it I had my insurance and temp registration lined out when I went to pick it up.

But I’ve always been told, and this is how I feel, that a truck isn’t a commercial vehicle until you make it one. There’s no law anywhere that says you can’t have a truck for a daily driver. You may have to buy state fuel permits just based on the gvwr but other than that I’d think bill of sale and insurance and you’re good to go.

I feel the same way as Long FLD ...its not a commerical vechile untill I make it one..and I got 4 states to co thru to get it home I can skirt the scales .. but I don't need a mess if I get stopped for some reason I've call all 4 of the states I have to pass thru and get the same answer as I stated in my 1st post... the fuel permits are what concern me I would ratver just buy them vs get fined.. but Iam a cheap B##@##@.. hate to buy something that I might not really have to have.. thought about playing the Iam new at ths card if I was stopped but I done that once or twice and got a front row schooling from the man in blue before ..

Lol ya NM is $10, but AZ is the worst when it comes to that. $140 for a 4 day permit.

Why do you need a permit, you are transporting the truck to another state, you are not hauling for hire.

It goes back too according to some DOT officals you need a fuel permit just to travel in that state.. it depends on just whom you talk to.. I guess..lol.. I think I might see if Perry Mason is still available
