How would you log this?

Stayed in a motel and my semi is parked at the jobsite about 7 miles away. I drove a dually from the motel to the jobsite which is not in my home state so I have to log the driving in it since it is over 10k.

A pretrip on a pickup with no trailer takes less than five minutes. Do I just flag a pretrip and go straight from off duty to driving? When we leave the motel we drive about 1/4 mile to a gas station and get fuel, coffee, etc. This may take 15 min then we drive the five min or so to the job site

So basically in the course of thirty minutes I went:

Off duty
On duty - pretrip
Driving - 1/4 mile to gas station
On duty - fueling
Driving - 6 miles to job
On duty

There is no way to fit or really even flag this much stuff in the course of just thirty min. What is the proper way to log something like this? I don't worry about it so much in the pickup but I may hop in the semi and go somewhere during the day using that same log and want everything straight.

 

I'd log it all "off duty"

To my way of thinking there is nothing to log once you left your big truck to take your overnight break - i.e. all off duty until you get back and to work at your big truck

Or, are you somehow getting compensated for work time outside of the truck enroute to/from motel?

 

That's a giant PITA.

I'd probably just go to line 4 and stay there until you do some real driving. 6 miles with a stop for fuel and drink just doesn't fit neatly in a paper log book.

 

On duty from pre trip then line 3 after fuel for 1/4 hr drive to jobsite.

 

It is all paid time from when we leave the motel until we get back to the motel. Some days don't drive the big truck at all but legally we have to log when driving the dually.

I worry about getting stopped in the dually either enroute to the gas station or from the gas station to the job and not having my book straight. I saw a cop light somebody up right in front of the motel the other morning.

 

Just cover your butt. If it's six miles log it as 15 min driving. Your worried and 6 miles isn't worth a ticket.

 

Yes I want to cover my butt. The only thing I worry about is if I get a super picky cop and I am driving and show no time for pretrip, or the fuel, or asks how I got the drink and breakfast I am eating while driving. I got stopped once and the cop was really using his investigative skills.

 

Then do what your doing log it just as you would a tractor and don't worry about it.

 

Normally I log things exactly how I do them but this five status changes in 30-45 min. I can't figure how to fit it all in that short of a time span on the log.
