So here is my situation. I am 27, I have 3 kids and a wife. In May 2007 I had pancreatitis that put me out of work. At that point I was doing security at oil refineries and TV stations, and they weren't keen on the idea of me being on oxycodone while patrolling their property. So, I was sick on and off through June 2009 when I had surgery to correct the pancreas issue. I am 100% healthy now, and hav actually lost about 60 lbs since then. :D I found a job as a bill collector in Oct. 2009 working for Verizon. In early 2010, when Alltel began their takeover of Verizon accounting, I was laid off. Right before the 6 months needed for unemployment, and basically putting me into a corner to apply at McD's and the like. Which I did. I did not get hired because in Toledo there is a LOT of maufacturing jobs, and auto industry jobs. When almost 20% of my city was unemployed, I was applying to the same jobs as people who worked at a factory for 25 years, and were just laid off. Who do you think got the job? Not I.

So...I have applied to quite a few companies and all but 3 have said there is NO WAY they will work with me until I get stable job history. Even though I can prove what I was doing, they don't care.

So far I have been turned down by:

Garner, TMC, Roehl, Maverick, Stevens, US Express, and BTC.

I have been given the usual treatment from:

Swift (call us when you graduate...click), Werner (oh! We could get you home every week! Drive the newest trucks! Become a trainer after 6 months! :biggrin_25513:)

I have been given more than a conditional "yes" from:

Baylor Trucking. And, Trans Am said I should fill out an app, that there isnt anything that would make the answer "NO".

Is this normal right now? And, I know the insurance companies run the industry now, but why the strict requirements for newbies like me when there are FELONS and 20 year old kids getting jobs over me just because they had a job last month. :biggrin_25513:

I graduate from Trainco on Jan. 7th, 2011.

    HELP!

More than a conditional yes??? Doesn't that mean "Come on down?" Who cares what the other companies said? Shine them on!

I haven't heard any negative about Baylor. What's holding you back there? Go for it! What're ya waiting on?

yea thats pretty normal, graduate and work for the one that hires you and stay there!! No less than a year. Tough it out. You have to work for a rookie company first, thats the way it works, it doesn't matter which one, take the first one that hires you. If you get a yes from a few of them, decide on which hometime suits you best and benefits.

I am doubting I will get a yes from anybody though. I can just see me being the guy they send home after I get to orientation.

I hear these stories, and I think..."that sucks that it happens to you, but I will be different." Then here I am...:(

TransAm would be a decent starter company...In my own thread I started looking for advice just as your are a member here gave me some invaluable advice "Just Keep Knocking on Doors Sooner or Later One of Them Will Open up" Dont let it get you down, but also dont let the "No" votes get you into a way of thinking that you have to settle for one of the mega carriers. Keep Trying, Keep Your Chin Up, and Stay in the Game.. best of luck to you Mike!! :biggrin_25525:
