I got a job in trucking operations. What long term career options do I have?

I live in Indiana. Went to college, got a degree, finished in December. I got hired by a trucking company to work in operations for them in June. Been there for a few months now.

Really happy with my job, I enjoy what I do, and I am compensated fairly. Only problem is that I am working overnights, and my wife is pregnant. At my particular location, Most people are working overnights.

Doesn't have to be 9-5, I just don't want to start my work day between the hours of 5 PM to 4 AM. I am open to relocating or switching companies (once I get a bit more experienced).

Any suggestions to look at? I like the job, but I don't want to kill my family life for it...

Trucking companies have many departments, as you know. Management trainees with college degrees are moved from one department to another before getting a more permanent assignment. Whereas cross-dock and dispatching are mostly night work, safety and compliance, sales, claims, accounting, etc. are mostly day work.

 

Any trucking operation worth their salt could find an office position for you with "normal" hours. If you've asked and they won't/can't accommodate you then you probably wouldn't want to work there long term anyway if you have anything of value to offer. Hopefully you're not stuck due to insurance needs?

 

I have not asked yet. I am still relatively new and nothing needs to be done immediately.

I suppose I will give it a couple months and then see what they have to say. Thanks a lot everyone.
