I need a good beginner's text on big rigs. Any suggestions?

I want to know more about big trucks. Basics about diesel engines, brakes, suspensions, transmissions, maintenance, troubleshooting, any of that kind of stuff and/or anything you feel a new driver ought to at least be familiar with. What can you recommend?

check a local college if they have a diesel mechanics course. if so they should have some kind of book you can buy in the bookstore.

"The Tractor Trailer Book" by Jimmy Cox has good reviews and is available at amazon.

The CDL handbook that the DMV provides has quite a bit of use full information
in it. It goes over the basics of everything pertaining to a truck including brakes,
tranny, engine and actually driving it.

If they do not provide it for free I'm sure it can't be more than $10 or $15 bucks.

Come on now Dude, you already drive a school bus, right? Diesel, air brakes, longer wheel base, high center of gravity, just imagine the tots not behind you and instead, some boxes or food items etc.

I would get 'Bumper To Bumper'. It is the textbook that a lot of community CDL truck-driving schools use.
