LOL. Miggila, you can sit and read these threads for weeks at a time and somebody is always going to have some kind of pissed off attitude towards one co. or another. If you can get a job that pays a competitive wage and provides good equipment , Do your part and go in with a good work attitude and give your choice the benefit of the doubt.Tude goes alongway!:biggrin_25525::biggrin_25525:

    lol- beat me to it!

    Miggila.. IGM is correct...

but I ask - why restrict yourselves to those three? Or is that the result of an elimination process already? I had 4 pre-hires before I ever went to school, and it's just blind luck that I ended up at one of them.

Between leaving school with my CDL and coming to work here (I'm still in training), I applied at over 50 companies. Most never bothered to respond, and some let me know that they're not hiring in my area. Be ready for that rejection. But keep plugging away.

I was a week from going with a fall-back (bottom feeder) when I got yes answers from a couple companies. Made a choice, and here I am.

There are dozens of companies that will hire newbies.. post here and I'll PM you the URL to a pretty good list (it's on a different board, and posting the URL here would probably get me in trouble. again). Even so, though, apply at companies that don't admit they hire newbies.. you never know. I got an approval from a tanker company (but an experienced driver showed up at the last minute. The company - rightly - gave him the job).

Just my two cents - it sounds like a cop out, but really, only you can decide what company would best suit your needs.

There are issues with the paperless logs, from what I hear. Not that they break or anything - but .. for instance, if you start your fueling at minute 29 (swipe your comdata), and finish at minute 42 - the log will show you as fueling for 30 minutes.

So, if you don't time things right, you can do yourself out of a bunch of drive time.

If you really want paperless logs, see if your chosen company accepts DDL logs. Quite a few companies do, these days. Keep the log on the laptop, print when needed..

As for reefers - I was agin 'em before I started. Having signed on with a reefer company, though, I can say that they're not a big hassle at all. A bit more effort at the beginning/end of some runs, and an extra tank to fuel.. but the noise is definitely not an issue.

Of course, some reefer LOADS might be a PITA. Generally speaking, May is no-touch. So I don't have to unload 30K pounds of cabbages or something. Stephens, I think, is produce mostly(?) - so yeah, it could be a tremendous PITA.

Somebody else on the boards mentioned something I'd not considered. Remember, there are freight slowdowns. A reefer can haul anything a box can - the converse is not so. Better chance at a load if you have a noisybox, I think.

miggila, did you try Steel Warehouse, in South Bend? They had a sign up looking for drivers, said students welcome. There's also Midwest Logistics (not sure about students), Risinger, Millers Special Delivery, Kingman, in Elkhart, that are local companies.
    Don't limit yourself.
