I am in my 2nd week of trucking school in Phoenix, Az and am looking to find a Trucking Job where I am home nightly or at least every other night. I don't mind un-loading my trailer, working as many hours as come my way( as long as I am home every other night or nightly), and am a hard worker, I will work my ##### off to put food on the table for my family. I just can't really go OTR with a 4 and 6 year old. Does anyone know where to look to find a decent paying local gig?
I have a 5 and 8 year old and im doing it, ive been away from home for 6 weeks now and finally finished training.( getting my truck monday) When i get a year under my belt i will try for local or regional. Im not gonna lie but it sucks being away but if im gonna feed my family, thats just how it is going to be for now. Sorry i didnt answer ur question but just wanted to let you know if you have to you can go otr.
You really should have thought of that before you decided to go trucking. Your first job will likely be OTR, and you will only be home a few days a month, for at least a year. Start pounding the pavement in your town. Who knows, you might get lucky.
Agreed, Start calling, one by one, all your local companys, and see if they have a student program. Most will not, but some could, and you might get lucky. If not you will have a local list of how much experiance each requires, and will help you decide if you could sacrafice as little as 3 to 6 months OTR to satisfy there (insurance carriers) requirements, and maybe have something lined up? It makes it alot easier to swallow the fact that you may have to put the time in, to get where you want to be, if you know that its just temporary, and have something better already lined up in 3/6 months? OTR is basicly training, CDL school will teach you how to pass the test. Company trainers (should) train you how to drive, and abide by rules and regulation. Some companys offer better home time then others, depending on your location and there available routes, so the more you inquire with, the better chance of finding something that will fit for your needs. In an area the size of Phoenix, if you look hard enough, you should be able to find something !!!! Even consider checking into the refuse collection business. Depends on how bad YOU want it, almost anything is possible !!!
