How could you make more money? Not the obvious, get paid more by brokers, etc...

In this market the only thing I can do to increase the bottom line is to cut expenses, do more with less. Less eating in restaurants, save fuel, shop for fuel prices more diligently. Things like that.

    Specialize.

You can get more money per mile, and compete with fewer trucks when you are not sitting empty with the same old dry van as all the other empty trucks in one location competing for the same freight.

Related to specialization would be versatility.

A reefer can haul a refridgerated load for a premium, but could haul pallets that would normally be hauled in a dry van if they wanted to move to a better area.

If you want to make more money, you have to either:

1)provide a better service to your customers so they are willing to pay you more money, or
2)you have to be able to operate cheaper than the other guy.

Unless you really know what your customer needs, 1 is going to be impossible, and competing on cost with the duct tape and immigrant driver crowd is going to be tough

Steal your fuel, skip weigh stations, run fake or nonexistent logs.
You'll be rich all the way to Mexico and ####ed as soon as you cross back over.
