Suppose you've been out of driving for a few years for whatever reason and now you want to go back to it. I know from, personal experience, you can't start from where you left off. You have to start all over again as if you'd never driven. How would you do it? Which company would you go with and why?
Sense I never got a reply to this thread I started doing research myself. I think I made a mistake in going with the company I'm with and should have gone with US Express. I talked with a number of drivers and while all companies have good and bad sides, US Express had the fewest complaints and the most praise from their drivers. If I'm wrong please feel free to correct me.
I'm new here, so I never saw the OP until you "refreshed" it. I'd probably see if I can get back with the company I'm currently working for now. They require 1 yr recent experience but they do hire fresh out of the CDL school in a few cases, like if the guy lives close to their main terminal and happens to be a Dutchman. They'd probably let me back after a long hiatus, might require a few days with a trainer.
As long as you keep jacking around with those big companies, the only difference between them, is the color of their trucks !!!! I personnally wouldn't work for pam or usx, just my way of thinking. Companies with less than a hundred trucks, have always been better, in my opinion !! Good Luck driver.
I have been driving for 30 years and have never driven for a company with more than 20 trucks. There are a heck of allot more little outfits than there are "mega" carriers .
The biggest change I would make is the type of trailer I'd pull. I started out dragging a box around. If I could start over, I'd jump immediately into flatbed...
I would try and start again like I did the first time... started out pulling end dumps and bottom dumps in Alaska. Then I would not do what I did before.... leave Alaska.
I would do it the same way. I started out on tankers for a second tier company. Specialize early if you can. Start at the top in your job search and work your way down. Don't assume a company that advertises 1-3 years experience won't hire someone with less. Get face to face with the person with the power to make a decision and sell yourself.
How are we supposed to know if it is a mistake if you don't tell us the company you did choose? Mikeeee
