The teacher in my school said if you want to get home as an OTR driver, you will figure out how to get home. I asked him, the director was in the room, they both just laughed. So how do you get home if you want to?

Just depends. Either put in for home time or get creative on your routing on the right loads. Anything that goes through the Florida panhandle gives me a chance to stop and see my fiance and kids. A lot of times I get loads that will go to central and south Florida where my route solution has me taking 20 or 40 all the way to 75 then going south, but I route my happy self down to 10 and go through the Florida panhandle anyways. And then on the way out of Florida, if the load is go west, I come right back up through the panhandle again. So I get a little hometime without the hassle of scheduling. My fleet manager even knows that if I am ever in a position to have a Florida load put on me, to d it because she knows exactly what I do, lol. Part of it will depend on how whether you are a company or lease driver and how forgiving the company is on out of route miles. My company doesnt really care what I do as long as I deliver on time.

I found a dedicated account where I only have to do three loads a week and most of those go back and forth past my house I am allowed to bobtail home as well . It really depends on the company the routs they run and how strict.they are about out of route miles . My boss is very lenient when it comes to going home during the week just have to stay on time and be safe .
