I've been in a financial bind for close to a year now and let my car insurance lapse. I wasn't working and something had to give and since I wasn't driving, I canceled my insurance. I'm in Florida and if you cancel your insurance you have to return the plates to your car and I didn't. They suspend your license because of that.

Anyway, I've been thinking about trying to get a CDL and drive but am concerned about the suspension. I looked at a lot of company websites and half of them have something about 'no suspensions'. I have had no accidents for 13 to 15 years (I forget exactly), no moving violations for about the same 13 to 15 years, no DUI's ever. I don't think I have even had a parking ticket for 10 years or better.

I thought MAYBE I had a good shot at getting a job driving until I saw that, but wanted to post where someone with experience can offer advice. It's not like my license was suspended for a traffic violation, drugs, alcohol, or anything like that. But hopefully someone can tell me if that is going to prevent me from landing a job. Thanks!!

While I don't think the insurance lap issue would be an issue, why would they care, but the license suspension might come into play. You could always call a few recruiters and kinda get a feel about how serious they think it is.

Thanks. yeah, they only suspended my license because of the insurance lapse, but I am sure it would show on my record regardless. I have been thinking about calling recruiters anyway to ask about schedules so I will ask about that first. Schedules won't matter if I can't get hired on anyway. Thanks

Go to school and get your CDL.
Some companies will make a big deal out of it, but plenty of others will hire you.
I'll bet if you talk to Florida Beauty Express in Miami, they'll hire you. Stay there a few months, then change companies if you want.
Many companies are bending their hiring rules these days and many websites don't reflect that.

The Florida unemployment office will probably pay for CDL school.

I had my license suspended for failure to pay a fine. I payed the fine, got my license reinstated and never had a problem getting hired. Schneider hired me, Button hired me and now I am working for Airgas. I disclosed it on every application. Never been an issue. My opinion is people will overlook menial things if they think they can trust you.

I'm looking at CDL schools now (Sage in Ft Pierce looks pretty good) but forking over tuition or even borrowing it is going to be hard without some assurance of having a job afterwards. I'm going to talk to a couple companies and ask about that, but from reading through this and other forums, I know not to believe one word that comes out of their mouth.

I think (I hope) you should be okay. You should call some companies and explain your situation to find out.

I had a worse situation at one point early in my career. Suspension due to non-payment of an out-of-state speeding ticket (in a truck). Long story; I was stupid back then. Anyway, I was able to find work with those circumstances. The fact is your record is clean, and that's what really matters. I bet they'd approve you because it wasn't driving-related, as opposed to a DUI or reckless driving suspension.

That's encouraging. Failure to pay a fine is about as low level as my situation is so that gives me some assurance I have a shot at finding a job. Thanks for letting me know that

Well I was apprehensive about posting my question, but I'm glad I did. It sounds as though my situation is less severe because your was over a moving violation. It sounds as though it might be an issue but not one that will prevent me from getting hired on somewhere. Thanks

Yes, If it was suspended over a moving violation it'd be a different story. If it has been suspended companies want to know why. If its for something menial like you say, its not a big deal. Almost all companies want to know if your license has been suspended in the last 3 years. Yours=not a big deal at all…..I went through the same situation(actually I received a ticket and didn't pay the fine in a timely manner)
