I am no tech wiz, but my daughter has an IPod 4th gen she bought for about $100. She has music, internet, texting, Skype and games. No monthly fees, and it works anywhere there's a WiFi signal. The screen is small to me, but then I'm old. Would an IPod work to replace most of the data requirements/costs of a cell plan? A cellphone is still needed for phone calls where a WiFi signal isn't available, or for emergencies, but the data need would be much less right?

Verizon, which I consider the best for OTR drivers has unlimited talk for $40 or so. What costs are you trying to eliminate and where are you going to do d the free wifi everywhere you o?

I will probably be calling Mexico daily from the road. If I'm understanding the Verizon plans, a Smartphone plan with 2gb is $60/month. 4gb plan is $70/month. I can add 1000 minutes of calls a month to Mexico for another $15 vs. using Skype for free. Skype video calls on a smartphone will probably use quite a bit of data, so was thinking an IPod would take care of Skype plus music for me.

Aren't there a lot of WiFi hotspots, such as McDonald's , Starbucks, etc with free access, or not usually available while on the road? Here in Mexico, you can get a WiFi signal in almost any spot in any city for free, or along many of the interstates. The city buses here now have Wifi access.

    Thanks for any advice.

You can find WiFi a lot of places. Most of the big chain truck stops want to sell it to you though. Therefore where lots of McDonalds and other fast food joints give you a connection for free the ones at truck stops generally do not.

Ever try to park a rig at Starbucks? You don't get in the way of 4wheelers and their coffee they will be all over you like a swarm of angry hornets.

From what I've seen, a lot of Starbucks customers will climb up anyone's rear end if they don't get their coffee just the way they want it, when they want it, for no reason at all. Kind of like an outlaw trucker meeting up with a trooper. :biggrin_255: There are still places to tuck away nearby, right?

Yeah you can pull right in to any Starbucks, mcd, etc with that rig, any time! Lol. I can see where if you were only calling foreign countries, you can save money via data, if you have access, but it isn't free, and isn't very good service in the first place at truckstops.

No there aren't. Nobody wants you in their parking lot. Not to mention, venturing into unknown parking places as a rookie is an easy way to crunch something,

That's what I want to avoid - the bending #### up part.
