I was thinking about running an add to find a owner who will teach me to drive so that I can get my CDL. I'm willing to pay someone. I already have my permit so I can drive with anybody.:biggrin_25526::biggrin_2559:

That is a good question. I know the tech college where I live allow students to use the training trucks and busses for a fee to get endorsements and if you already have your permit they have separate classes for them.

I never went to school, never spent 1 minute in a class or any kind.

I read the manual, took the written test, passed the driving test, CDL in hand.

You can do it, but you will really be limited when it comes to getting hired. Most companies want you to go through an accredited school. So do most insurance companies.

You will really be hurting yourself trying to take the easy way. Read some of the other threads on this forum where drivers have done this and are now asking how to correct it.

Of course, it helps if you have something lined up ahead of time.

I had some connections obviously, and a truck to practice with. If you have no idea about a job after getting the CDL, then I wouldn't advise going that route.

I could get any competent person their CDL in a very short time by taking them out and showing them how to drive. It's not rocket science by any means.

It's not rocket science but if the job you have lined up doesn't pan out in three months then you are up poo creek. Now who are you going to drive for? A lot of independent O.O's won't take you on because their insurance won't cover you.

Most states do not require you to attend a driving school. There has been some discussion about having a national requirement for drivers to complete 168 hours or training before being allowed to obtain a CDL. I never attended a driving school. They didn't have them when I learned to drive. The main problem you may have is to find an owner operator who is willing to stick their neck out to help you get your CDL. It is very difficult to get an inexperienced driver covered with most insurance companies. Mine requires a minimum of 2 years with a clean MVR. If you know someone who runs their own authority who is willing to work with you then that might be your best bet. It will give you an edge with some carriers if you already have a CDL. Some may still want you to go with their trainer for a few weeks to a few months. Judging from the quality of driving I have seen in recent years, having a certificate from a driving school hasn't produced any more competent drivers. There are some states that have private companies that will rent you a truck and trailer to take your test. I would check around before spending a lot of money. You may also check to see if their are any state vocational schools or community colleges near you that offer CDL training. The cost will be much less than going to a private school, but will take a little longer to complete. Some are certified to give you the road test on their site.
