update: think i got it figured out. went to website, i have a normal amount of play so i have a almost new big tex 14ee-20 with dual 7k axles,, grease zerk on the hubs. i jacked up each side today and check the tires and they seem to have a slight vertical play in them,, they spin fine. like the bearing nut could be tightened down a little,, but since they are all almost exactly the same, i thought maybe i was over reacting. i like things perfect but maybe if i turn the nut enough to make it have zero slop, perhaps it will be too tight. thanks if anyone responds.
The first thing is you have to find out what kind of axles they are possibly Dexter axles or whatever type there's a tag somewhere on them to tell you or you can call the trailer manufacturer. Second thing is you need to find online whatever the correct procedure is for setting those bearings. Different axles and different manufacturers have different instructions but generally they have you seat the bearing while you spin the wheel and then you back it off and use a dial indicator. But you follow exactly whatever their instructions are. If it were me I would follow their procedure and make sure they're all set properly.
The one thing hardly ever mentioned is that the wheel end play is less when it’s being operated. Trying to make it zero is all but impossible. Setting it at spec, probably between 1-5 thousandths. Any tighter, trying to make it zero, and you risk it getting too tight while running. 1 thousandth is the thickness of a piece of paper. Use a dial indicator. I just did all 4 drives, using the exact procedure, after checking them with a dual indicator, 3 of them were a tiny amount too loose. Timken or Stemco has good instructions on YouTube.
