    Hi,
I'm a newbie here and I've been reading my butt off and have enjoyed all of it!!I had a few questions and was hopeful that I could get a few responses.
I've decided, since I have the $$ I might as well go to the local CC here in Houston (Lonestar College) and get my CDL, etc. Ironically it's the same school and campus that Stevens sends their newbies.
I don't want to be obligated to any company for my schooling.
My question is, even though the college advertises a 98% hire rate, I know there's no guarantees with that. Paying for the school straight up it appears it will be in the $3300-$3500 range which seems way more appealing than around $6-$7 K PLUS interest, etc even if the hiring company pitches in it's $100 a month for a year.

Having said this....If you were a newbie and had the $$ to pay for school......would you still go with a Company that puts you thru school and then go to work with their trainer(s) for a few months, etc...etc?

    Thanks,
    Sly

If had been able to pay the money up front, there is no way I would be tied to any company for any length of time. You have the ability to go anywhere that hires new drivers. You probably need to start talking to some company recruiters to iron out the details. Best of luck.

I went the community college route. I had no problems finding a job.

Do you mind telling what Company you went to work for? Any stories, good, bad or ugly? :)

    Thanks,
    Sly

Windsmith has been driving for 2 months (got his CDL 05/06/12), but if you run his 'handle' through the Search function you will find plenty of posts, LOL.

He also managed to 'walk' into a job with a brand-new 'company' with absolutely NO driving experience!!

You're better off using the Search function to look on some of the other threads and find some experienced drivers.
