Looking at '02 379 that has complete documents on $31k Cummins rebuild with 200k miles on it. Haven't seen the documents yet but just wondering what level of work would have been performed to hit that dollar figure. Also, it is a 10 sp with 370 rears. I drive slow as it is but wondering it those gears are going to be too tall for mostly flat land driving.
Bill got the hood fever! Here's the equation to figure out RPM at cruising speed. (Cruising speed) x (axle ratio) x (transmission ratio) x 336 / (tire diameter) Example: Say you cruise at 65, 3.70 axle, 0.75 overdrive, and low pro 24.5. 65 x 3.70 x 0.75 x 336 / 42 = 1443 RPM. Again, this is just an example. You'll have to find out the ratio of the 10 sp if it's OD. Also the height of tires. There are many people more qualified than I to answer questions regarding $31k rebuild and "sweet spot" RPM on Cummins, so no comment on those from me.
If it's got LP 24.5 with the 3.70's, and the trans is a .73 OD, you should be at roughly 1400 @65 and 1200 at 55. Not bad if you ask me..
If the $31k is just the motor reciepts i would have to say its a complete new or reman motor not a rebuild. I bought a new n14 a few years back and thats about what it cost me for the motor plus the installation. Mine was a 500hp with an 18spd with 3.70's on tall 24 rubber i got around 5.5 to 6mpg with it but i run heavy and alot of back roads.
Sheez for $31000 it better smell like new !!! Just be aware my W900 at best gets 6 mpg with me driving it. My T600's 6.5-7 depending on load etc. If you have a driver in that hood and if it's not governed be lucky to get 5-5.5. Just my experience.
Thanks. Wasn't sure about the ratio. Yes it has tall rubber. I will likely drive it next week and able to get a look at the documents. Even with 200k on motor, APU and lots of upgrades it is a little pricey at the $50k range for an '02.
So can you tell enough about a motor with oil sample and a Dyno? My situation is a little different as I do not run a lot of miles. In the process of selling my truck to one of my drivers and looking for a truck that I can spiff up a bit and use it to "represent" the company. So being in a high mile truck is not going to be the level of risk it would be if I had to be driving every week to cover the nut. I see 379's with a Million on them. But what is the best way to get a decent idea of what is going on inside?
The pre egr tractors are getting a little on the spendy side now a days I can see 31 grand if done at a dealership if it was an out of frame major
