Looking for advice on transitioning on everyday job to a career with trucking

Did everyone get a part time job during schooling to help with everyday bills or get enough to provide a cushion?at the point of getting into the school and starting my career in trucking.reason I ask is the school is three weeks and a 8-5 m-f schedule.

 

as with any training you get, the more you focus and put into it the more you will get out. If you try to work another job while in school you will be stretching yourself thin for testing etc.

try to save up a small "nest egg" to get you through school.

 

Yes, I had 3 part time jobs while going to day time trucking school. I was dog tired each day, and really exhausted on Mondays from working the weekends, but I had bills to pay, a truck to pay for, etc,etc.

The sacrifices you make now, pay off later

 

Attended a really good 8 week 320hr diploma program in FL. Already had enough finances without needing additional employment. One guy was getting govt. assistance, and bragging about not having to pay for it. I'd rather be well motivated in financing my credentials, it has paid for itself. Initially hired on with an OTR company. Went with a big time oil field service company, got per diems, paid weeks off, lodging, etc. Now driving for a big Midwest refridgerated company hauling mainly frozen foods, a job always in demand. Good luck.

 

You should have already saved enough to not worry about having to get a part time gig.

Consider a weekend job delivering pizzas....it'll look good on your resume lol...I'm not kidding ethier & that's the best time for tips.

 

If you are by the truck stops there's the pizz hut on ww white out on the east side always hiring drivers. I always tipped those delivery guys if they were on time and no slices were missing. (Used to just pull in at the heb and go to little Caesars before they raised the prices)

Or just do some uber runs when it is convenient for you. Ain't like there aren't any drunks running around on the weekend that need a ride?

 

You need to do what you have to do to make ends meet. But I would not sacrifice on sleep. You need to be alert for when you are driving or sitting in the classroom.

Are there any part time schools in your area? I am going part time 225 hours, 4 months Wed and Fri 5pm-9pm and sun 8am-6pm. They also have a SAT-SUN schedule too.

 

I think I'd rather do full time and get the time in and not take 3-9 months lol thought about a little delivery on the side lol

 

Well to each his own.

I am still getting a full time check from Uncle Sam so for me a 4 month program was the best. Best of luck to you!
