Looking for just a bit of info

Good evening, I am looking to get into driving this summer and I am looking for a bit of advice/info. I was just recently let go (Not fired but laid off i guess, company eliminated my position, I refused the $6.50 an hour cut in pay for a non management position and took a severance) from my retail management job after 17 years.

I am looking to attend Allstate Trucking in Seymour CT. If anyone could give my any info or advice on them it would be appreciated.

I wont be attending until this summer due to having a SLAP Lesion tear in my right shoulder with arthritis. I will be having surgery in 2 weeks to repair it. Has anyone had this type of surgery and if so did it affect your ability to drive afterwards?

My goal is to have all my endorsments and work towards being a tanker driver. Any suggestions on what companies to start off with to work my way towards a tanker job?

I am sure I will have many more questions but I will start with those.

Best thing I can say is? do your research on companies, there is a lot of drivers on hear that will say stay away from this company or that company, One thing I'll agree with, dont get trapped into a lease, learn to drive and get some experience behind you, good luck in your new adventure

 

Truck drivers are prone to rotator cuff tears and I know of 4 drivers that have required surgery to repair this condition. You may want to ask your doctor how you will do with your condition and truck driving.

 

I hear Schneider might be the way to go for tanker training.

 

First thing get that shoulder healed and rehabbed before venturing out. Research driving schools and companies before accepting anything. Most of all, you won't learn everything at the school or first job. Ask questions.

 

I did mention it to the doctor when we were discussing surgery and he did say I should be fine I just need to give it time to heal thats why I am waiting about 4 monthes or so before I head to school. I am only 33 so I got some good years left in me. Retail is a pretty rough on the body so I am not worried about pain or getting hurt I guess I am just more worried about the ability to shift for long periods. I have driven a standard for the last 10 years I am just concerned about the long periods of shifting. I am by no means letting my shoulder injury deter me though.

 

Draven, I, too, had a SLAP 2 tear and surgery on it 5 years ago. I was working a tough, food service job 3 and a half months later. Just do your rehab and you will be fine. Your shoulder will never be the same as it was before the injury but you won't have any problems shifting. It will be a little arthritic from time to time but nothing that isn't managable.

Shifting wont be a problem, especially on the open road. Just city and start up. You'll be fine.

 

Thank you, that does sound encouraging, although I am looking foward to the surgery I am not looking foward to the rehab, but I will make the most of it when I start rehab.
