Can drivers negotiate with lumpers to reduce unloading time? For example, driver tells lumper they'll pay $50 extra to be unloaded hours sooner.

It's like negotiating with a rock. I learn which places are the slowest and avoid them when booking loads.

    Nope.

Keep quiet about that. It wont work.

Now if you offered oh a ... dance hall, alcohol, party bus, steaks, fries and a chance to win a new car... /sarcasm...

You have to go higher up the chain most of the time. Receivers can make things happen, but you have to be on the dock to talk to them. That means you will be the one unloading. It’s not going to happen on the first time in a warehouse either. For all they know you’re a spy from corporate. After a few times you’ll see who can do what for you. Some places your just stuck. We’re also talking cash only

ONCE in a while... as in a blue moon, for example a real life story from a OSD load, I was told by the insurance people take it home, feed my family. Eat it. What? This? 50 pounds of stick butter? Just because the forklift scraped the box?

    Yes. Eat it.

    Humph.

Go to next shipper with reefer maintaining 40 for 50 pounds of butter in the far back... Ugh... Shipper in NYC Core off I think Atlantic Ave in Brookyn, a steel fab shop... in the basement dock.. says it will be a while.

Since I surveyed the hungry workers manning the machinery and not speaking english, I offered the butter in exchange for loading.

I was rolling for the GWB inside of 10 minutes. They enjoyed the hell out of that butter. Better than cash. And yes Dorothy you can haul steel in a reefer. =)
