Lumpers in a union??

    I had that exact scenario once.

    Disconnected docked trailer, bobtailed to truckstop and entered into a storm of telephone yelling. That took a day. They threatened my ###. Enough to scare me alittle bit. But I had a thousand on hand ready to go home from anywhere in the USA by ship if I had to... (To paraphrase) so... firing did not scare me so I stood my ground.

    In the mean time that bacon got warmer and warmer and warmer. I would not want to be the poor sap in the store buying that heated #### that got refrozen finally.

    Well it depends. I haven't had a lumper fee that high(maybe $200 at the most,anything higher than $250 I have to contact my dispatch to see what they're gonna do). At any rate for some of these shippers and receivers it's cheaper to have a contractor do the work (especially if you factor in lower labor costs-pay rate,insurance (if applicable),taxes,etc.

    I do have one gripe. One of you might answer it.

    My companies wail a hue and cry over 65 dollars to unload via lumper. What in the world happened to make these trailers get unloaded for 300 freaking dollars?! If I was still under them Pay me that and I'll lump it sheesh.

    Yep, pay me $300 and I, like you, will break the freight any day. HOWEVER....lol...You'll always have the driver that has the "I'm paid to drive, I got it here, it's YOURS I'm not touching it" attitude. Nothing against that mentality, but it does exist.

    We have 1 supplier that pays for a lumper to come to our building and help unload. The driver has the choice of helping and getting the lumper fee, not helping and the lumper gets the fee... strange deal, only one. We have a s&r department, so its not like they wont unload it...

    Im a lumper / owner of my own lumpering company. I work out of 7 docks & set my own rates.

    Lumper service charges 300$ , they think the carrier pays that ? It’s figured in to the freight bill. Trust it would be fair cheaper to pay the guy on the dock 25$ a hour .

    It depends. There are some places I’ve been sent where the lumper fee isn’t figured into the bill. There are some where we don’t pay the lumper fee.
