Are all the other NC-ers here as pysched as I am about this central licensing that Raleigh has decided to do? Now instead of getting our licenses (all types, including renewals, not just CDLs) at the DMV, we get the fun duty of waiting for them patiently in the mail...and if we're lucky, having them in a week...or maybe two...who knows...I'm sure the DMV has an ample staff up in Raleigh that can process the background checks/address verification on every license that comes through in just a couple of days...yeah, no doubt...which means for me (as well as the other two guys in my class that are going to the same company, same orientation) that we have to hope that the State can get them to each of us before we leave for orientation...

Great...just what I need to count on...the State not screwing me over in some way...oh well...now I just hope my fingerprints come back by Monday so I don't have to double dip and get the the license on Mon and THEN the H endorsement like a couple of days later...

Haven't heard about it. Is this suppose to be state wide? I got my learners not long ago, no problem at the local DMV.

Um, how does the process begin? If you are up for renewal, do you just wait for it be delivered? Do you not have to go down to have a current picture taken?
Or, do you have to go to the dmv to get a new pic taken, and then wait for it to come in the mail?

Just went into effect statewide (according to my local DMV office) on August 1st - if his info isn't correct and it hasn't been done yet everywhere, it will be "by fall". They've already made the switch in a lot of counties. Go to the NC DMV website and it will tell you all about it ("Drivers Licenses to be mailed to help fight fraud" is the headline.) They even do permits the same way. One of the guys in class got his 20 day temp permit (which the actual card, ironically, won't even reach him before he finishes testing out for his actual license...) last week when he got his permit and another got the same thing when he went to get his license.

Sixteen other states are making the switch too. They say it's so that they can run a background check and verify addresses and immigration status, etc.

That would be the second option. They take the pic, give you a pretty big card that has all the info that a regular drivers license would have, but doesn't have your pic on it. They send it all off to the DMV HQ in Raleigh, who then verifies the info, prints the license, and drops it in the mail.

That's just nuts. Most of the offices in Arkansas, or at least the ones I go to, have express lanes for drivers licenses. For renewals, you are in and out with the new license in about 10 minutes.
Of course, since they have your previous pics on file in the computer, and you are still at the same address, it goes all the quicker.

That's the way it was here until recently. We didn't have an "express lane" per say at my DMV, but if you were renewing, you were given a different type of number than everyone else and it typically went a LOT quicker. My last renewal took me a total of twelve minutes from the time I walked into the door to the time I walked out with my renewed license.

I hope for your sake that AR isn't one of those other 16 that have adopted it
