Ok I have a problem... How important is your previous job history? To give you an idea what I mean. My job history is alittle shakey at best. Was an independent contractor for two years. I have the 1099's for those Before that I worked for a company under the table. Cant call the company for any proof of employment because they went bankrupt. And then to add to that mess there is a gap or two of not working due to recession.

How much will this hurt me in getting a job? I finish school in three days and im afraid that I wont get a good job because of this.

I really want to go work for U.S. Xpress but I see they really look at employment history. Can anybody give me some insight on this. If im screwed for us xpress do you know of a company hiring that doesnt care? Other than C.R. England. Thanks in advance.

Also just to clarify during those gaps in between I did not collect unemployment or any benefits.

Hate to say this, all of the companies care. They want to know you are a stable employee. Plus the pesky fed requirement of seeing a 10 year employment history if you've never driven before...

The 10 year history is only for driving jobs, most companies only look at a rookies last three years

10 yr job history with the previous 3 being verified. Official Federal guidline, however, some companies go back 5 or 7, which is THEIR policy, not the Feds.

Just to back up Allowme, Yes it is a federal thing not a company thing. You must have 10 years of employment history for any company you apply to. You must have 1099's for any self employment and if you have any gaps in employment you have to have a notarized letter from someone stating what, where and when you were doing during those times.

Your best bet is to make up a resume and that way you will have it with you at all times. Looks a little more professional too!

What is so bad about collecting unemployment benefits, I worked at a plant that closed down 8 years ago, and as you received your pink slip the unemployment people were right there signing you up with the other 2000 folks. Do they count this against you?

I wouldn't say they would choose you first! Just like workman's comp claims. Why would they want someone who they will have to pay for when they are gone.

This is just speculation, I really have no clue as to whether this is a hiring factor or not.
