Need some experienced drivers input

Hello all...I retired from the military after 26 years of active duty. I now have several trucking job offers (I have experience driving in the military however, none in civilian world other than trucking school) and would like to have some views on helping me make the best decision.

I have an offer from a local company that travels to five states it's all day cabs and it pays around $15.75 an hour. There would be some loadinding and unloading assistance required as part of the job...it is based on a 40 hour work week with overtime possibilities...some Saturday work required.

The other job is for a flatbed company...I understand they pay load percentage not by the mile. This oppurtunity pays better but obviously requires much more time away from home.

Any advice or some things that I should consider before making a decision would be appreciated...

Both jobs would require me to start Monday 7 Jan.

well, the local job won't be considered experience in many cases if and when you move on.

How about family life? Is seeing the wifey or kids more important than the money? (yes I know you have about 60% retirement).

 

The local sounds like a good gig to me. Clock in 15 minutes early every day, drag your feet leaving, get that extra 1/2 hour per day. soak up the overtime when it's available. You should be seeing $800-$900 paychecks and still be home every night. I doubt you'd make that on the percentage deal, but even if you did, you'd be sleeping in the truck and spending weekends on the road to do it. Maybe if they have real good freight you could make a little more, but not much.

 

i would personaly take the 5 state day cab job because i like sleeping in my own bed at night

 

You'll make more on the clock than %. Prolly be happier too overall. I vote day cab and thanks for your service.

Local job wont be considered Experience?? Your kidding right?

 

When you run percentage pay, and rates get cut, your pay goes down. I'd take the hourly job.

 

But one poster said, the Local Job, is not considered Experience, If he moves on.

 

There's that American work ethic!


Are there benefits with either, to consider?

Check the local five state job out and take it, and I talked to a couple others including my insurance and it is viable over the road experience.
