Hello everybody!!! I don't have CDL yet, only have instruction permit. Just curious how Con-Way Freight apprentice program works. I know they have this program in Hagerstown MD. Does it mean that I should work only in Hagerstown terminal after finish my training? Or they can transfer me somehow to terminal in Winchester VA where I live? Thanks for help.
Need some info about Con-Way apprentice program.

I'm sure Jakebrake12 and ACH can fill you in on the details, I know he just finished the Apprentice program.
But If I were you I'd just go ahead and get the permit before hand. It would give you a leg up if a few of you are interviewing for the position. In this job market, you have to have that edge up on the other candidates. Good luck to you going forward. The Challenger Thanks this. -
Thank u CenutryClass! Do u work for Con-Way Freight? If yes, does your terminal hire newbies and how often? Heard it's difficult to get hired.

Just get the permit and apply. Find the email address of the terminal you're interested in and shoot the center manager an email showing your interest in working for CWF. I did that right before applying online, and I got an email that same day, saying I needed to come in for a interview.
I checked UPS Freight too, I know they hire newbies(may have to have a CDL already), but they had like 22 openings for drivers down in your area.
Good luck man, but Im sure the guys who work for Conway Freight will have the inside scoop for you.NHL_fan Thanks this. -
I wish u luck 2morrow! Let me know how u are doing. BTW in which state are u in?

I do JT loads for Con-Way right now for my training and be prepared to do just about as much backing up as you do forward. I remember pulling into a Con-Way yard last week and seeing a #### merry go round of sterling's going around there yard practicing stright line backing, ally docking, parallel parking, and reverse serpentine over and over and over again....
Also dont let anyone tell you any different pups and 53 footer trailers should never be in the same yard -

I believe there are two or three former Winchester drivers that transferred to Hagerstown back in 2009 with seniority when Con-way re-aligned their line-haul opps. If you're gonna start out at Con-way Hagerstown is the place to be in my opinion. They average like 80 night line-haul runs and another 20 or 25 on days whereas Winchester has like 10 at night and exactly 0 on days. If you went through the program in Hagerstown you would not leave if you wanna make money man.. -
I've been at CCX/Con-way for over 8 years now and will be the first to tell you it's a frustrating place to work. I still get frustrated but I drove OTR and remember how frustrating that was not getting paid for work I was doing. My first 3 to 5 years here were so so but now it is what it is. I've made over 80K twice and can make over 100K anytime I want man..
That said UPS Freight is the best job on the road period in my opinion. Con-way is good and top 10 IMO but it can be rough at times.. Good luck man.. -
Thanks Jake, I'll let you guys know how it goes tomorrow. Yea if all goes well ill be out of the Maspeth terminal. Not too big of a place. if I were to guess, around 40 doors.
