Network admin going trucker.. I want to DVR my self on the road. Please read

Ok first off I've been on computers since 1984 at the age of 4. I knew DOS and got around very well so I could play my old school video games ect..

So anyways i'm 28 now and know quite a lot and here is what I want to do once I start driving BUT I'm not sure the company I'll go with will allow it or if we keep the same truck ect...

I want to Digital Video Record my self with a LIVE webcam in the truck pointed at the drivers and sleeper area. Here at home I have a network with over 8 terabytes of hard drive space. The objective of doing this is to make a "rolling video log" of my driving and let my family see what I'm up to anytime they want. I think to do this I will need the following:

Two webcams of some type and USB extention cables.

Laptop with very good quality WIFI service where ever I maybe at. (Got the laptop just not the service I'm thinking verizon or something ?


Power supply that will always be on so my PC can always be ON. I may buy a cheaper laptop for this process just so I can not overheat my good one


The idea besides the DVR is a webpage where any of my family can logon and check on me. Hopefully I can make some kind of chime program so that I know when I'm being watched. I think it will be a very good tool for my little kids and wife. I also think I will enjoy watching the videos years later some what!


So what do you guys think? I'm a noob to what people can put in the trucks once they drive. I know i'm not to phase 1 yet but I want to know if it's do able? It will make my life less stressful and my familys!

 

This driver is doing something similar to what you are talking about. When he is driving it shows what he is seeing going down the road and when he is stopped it often switches to inside the cab. It is not up 100% of the time but it is broadcasting live for a remarkable portion of his day. I do not know how he is doing it all technologically but it is REALLY cool how you can use chat live, see his current route, see what he sees, etc. Probably you could contact him for more of the technical know-how. 5GB per month, overage is .05 cents per MB. I haven't hit it yet. There's software to run the connection that keeps track of your usage. It's not perfect but it gives you a pretty good idea.

I have my laptop sitting on a usb powered Royal notebook cooling pad and haven't had any problems yet. I like the fancy aluminum.

 

Just buy one drive at a time. The big bricks are always overpriced.
